Sport, Make-up and Daily Life After Rhinoplasty: Everything About the Recovery Process

Home|Our Blog

A rhinoplasty operation is not just a few-hour procedure spent in the operating room, but a long recovery journey that must be managed meticulously. The post-operative period is the phase in which patients ask the most questions and which requires patience and discipline. Questions such as "When can I wear my glasses?", "When can I start which sport?" or "Will wearing make-up harm my nose?" are cornerstones that determine the comfort of the recovery process. When it comes to aesthetics in İzmir, Op. Dr. Ayşe Öznur Akidil, who makes a difference both with the success of her operations and with post-operative patient follow-up, guides her patients so that they get through this process in the healthiest way. Here is a detailed recovery timeline to help you plan your life after the operation.

011. The First Week: The Critical Threshold of Healing

The first 7 days after surgery are the phase when the tissues are most sensitive and healing begins. During this period daily life is quite restricted but not completely static.

• Movement at Home: Taking short walks around the house the day after surgery stimulates blood circulation and helps expel oedema. However, heavy housework and bending over should be avoided.

• Nutrition: In the first days, eating softer, more liquid-based food rather than hard foods that are difficult to chew is important so as not to tire the facial muscles.

• Splint and Sutures: The protective splint on the nose and any sutures are usually removed by Op. Dr. Ayşe Öznur Akidil on day 7. From this moment on patients feel much more comfortable.

022. Return to Social and Work Life

Most patients can return to social life after the splint on the nose is removed (that is, at the end of the first week). However, the return to work life varies according to the nature of the job:

• Desk Jobs: For people who work at a computer, 7-10 days is a sufficient rest period.

• Physically Demanding Jobs: Those who work in jobs requiring heavy lifting or constant movement are advised to wait at least 3 weeks.

• Social Activities: When entering crowded environments, the utmost care must be taken to prevent the nose from being knocked. Calm activities such as the cinema or dinner are safe from the second week onward.

033. Make-up and Skincare Guide

Make-up is a subject many patients are impatient about in order to refresh their self-confidence. However, the right time must be awaited for the operated tissue to meet chemicals.

• When to Start? Light make-up can be worn after the splint is removed, that is, about 15 days after surgery.

• Product Choice: The skin is very sensitive during this period. Water-based or mineral-content products that do not clog the pores should be preferred. Heavy concealers can irritate the sensitive skin over the nasal bridge.

• Cleansing: When removing make-up, one must avoid tugging at the skin. A gentle cleansing milk and soft dabbing motions should be used. Op. Dr. Ayşe Öznur Akidil recommends not applying pressure to the nostrils until the suture lines have completely healed.

044. Sport and Exercise Timeline: What Is Possible in Which Month?

During exercise the increase in heart rate and blood pressure can trigger oedema in the nose and increase the risk of bleeding. For this reason the sport timeline is gradual:

• Month 1: Only light-paced walks. Sports that require bending, such as pilates or yoga, are risky in this period as they put pressure inside the head.

• Month 2: Light weight training and paced-up cardio can begin. Swimming (being careful of the risk of impact in the pool) is permitted in this period.

• Month 4: One can return to heavier training and fitness programmes.

• Month 6 and Beyond: For contact sports where the nose may be struck — such as football, basketball and boxing — it is essential to wait at least 6 months. Remember that bone healing takes up to a year, and a blow received during this period can lead to permanent asymmetries.

055. Wearing Glasses and Sun Protection

It takes time for the nasal bones to adjust to their new position and knit. Therefore the pressure created by glasses must be avoided.

• Glasses: Whether prescription or sunglasses, glasses should not be worn for the first 2-3 months so that no load is placed on the nasal bridge. If they absolutely must be used, contact lenses should be preferred, or tapes that fix the glasses to the forehead should be used.

• The Sun Factor: The only disadvantage of those who undergo aesthetic surgery in İzmir is living in a sunny city. Sunlight can make the oedema in the nasal skin permanent and darken the suture scars. For the first 6 months, high-protection (SPF 50+) creams and wide-brimmed hats must be used.

06Why Op. Dr. Ayşe Öznur Akidil?

Every stage after rhinoplasty is personal. While some patients are on their feet on day 5, for others this may take 10 days. By personally managing the post-operative follow-up process, Op. Dr. Ayşe Öznur Akidil determines activity permissions according to the tissues' rate of healing. At her clinic in İzmir, with her modern technologies and patient-comfort-focused approach, she turns that "uncertain" period after surgery into a safe recovery process.

The post-operative period makes up half of the success of the result. Being patient, following your doctor's instructions and protecting your nose are the most important investments for that beautiful and functional nose you will have for a lifetime.
